On the 29th of July, the final presentation of 2016 New Channel Dong Music Workshop took place at Yuelu Academy. A sharing session between the music workshop team and Yuelu cultural product creative group also happened at the same time.
It is co-sponsored by School of Design, Hunan University and Queen Mary University of London, planned by independent curator Jian Zhou, hosted by Dr Wei Wang.
The attendants include Prof. Nick Bryan-Kinns, Dr. Jennifer Sheridan (b00t Consultants), PhD students Lucia Marengo, Alessia Milo, Yongmeng Wu from Queen Mary University of London, Shen Yi, Tongtong Ning, Yating Zuo, and Xiang Xu from Hunan University, as well as the creative team leading by Jian Zhou, including young artists Liyu Gao, Keren Peng and Gangfeng Zhou. It is also very privileged to be able to invite Han Shi, the editor-in-chief of local biggest media Morning Weekly, as well as Liluo Yuan, the founder of Dingding Xing Media, as our honored guests.
In the New Channel camp, the HNU-QMUL team focused on musical products, based on surveying on traditional local culture in Dong minority area, combining featured craftsmanship like Dong brocade, bamboo weaving, wood carving, as well as product design and interactive technology, produced four creative cultural products with the feature of Dong minority group as well as impressive interactive experience.
“Keep Make” is the first work presented. It is designed by Prof. Nick Bryan-Kinns and Dr. Jennifer Sheridan, using the material of bamboo and Dong brocade. From the opening mount of the bamboo, you can hear the sound of the water and see the moving pattern of Dong brocade.
“Doye Boxes” is designed by Alessia Milo and Ms. Yi Shen. Doye is a traditional group dancing of Dong people, as well as a pattern indicating harmony in Dong brocade. In this design, Doye pattern is presented as Dong embroidery and paper-cutting. By rolling over the Doye box, or combining different boxes, different sound effect and color would be presented.
“Dong Shine” is designed by Lucia Marengo, Tongtong Ning and Yating Zuo. They use the bamboo basket for making the Dong brocade, redesigned the bamboo structure, embedded the gesture control on music playing and pausing, to make it a music box as well as a lamp.
The final work “Dong tunes” is designed by Yongmeng Wu and Xiang Xu. The original archetype came from the Lucky Flower, which Dong people hang on their symbolic buildings such as bridge, drum tower and village gate for good luck. They preserve the original shape and co-created the pattern with local craftsmen. By tilting the box, or rotating the nobs on the box, stories and songs can be played and switched, sound effect can be added as well.
The presentation is a mile stone at this stage for reviewing the design and sharing the experience. There will be more efforts put into the New Channel workshop for inheriting and propagating the local culture.
